There are a lot of settings located within the profile tab that control how everything is displayed, you are notified about messages, personal settings etc...

I would suggest that everyone check these controls out as you can do a lot of things from there to customize your personal experience here on the message board.

Here is a list of all the items you can control.

Account Related Settings
Forum Profile Information
Look and Layout Preferences
Notifications and Email
Personal Message Options

Edit Buddies

You can set how the messages appear for you, from newest to oldest, instead of oldest to newest, by going into your "Profile".  Then select "Look and Layout Preferences", place a check mark in the box next to "Show most recent posts at the top".  Then click on the Change Profile button that will save the changes.

Doesn't do much good to attempt changing some as the settings aren't kept.

That junk rube goldburg after thought pm system doesn't retain settings. Tried several times to sort the list newest to oldest; goddamned junk reverts back and wont stay even jumping back after reading a single message; forced to resort again. Dump the thing and load the version 2 beta has to work better.

Time for another ODH Opinion:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I guess somebody has to say it....Man, give us a break!!  If ya don't like it here then, as we used to say in the army, vote with your feet!  IB is providing a service at his own expense and time and doesn't charge us anything for using the site.  If ya think you can do better...DO IT!  Start your own site.  If it's better, we will all come over there.  Just quit complaining about everything and anything here...It isn't helping anything and is really distracting from why we come over here in the first place.

That's my opinion and I am stickin to it!

ODH, Out!

ODH

After not getting any help via pm from them on this had no option but to take it open. Best ever on any such question was message system has a new version 2 in beta not for production use. And the help section is so vague as to be worthless. Besides if no-one mentions problems how else will maybe an alternative method be mentioned to help.

Sometimes a though listed as beta the software is close to final release and if it clears up glitches or issues maybe changing is worth looking into. I've seen message systems on several different sites and never experienced such flustration in use as this one.

Is asking for some help wrong?

Bones,

My PM inbox only has 1 message in it but I think I remember it listing my PM's in newest to oldest order. Send me a few "meaningless" PM's and I'll see if what I'm remembering is correct.

I modified my profile a couple of weeks ago so that the message board messages show up with the newest at the top and it really saves me a lot of scrolling.

That's the way I've had mine setup and yes it does save some time.  (Just make sure to click on the Change Profile button that will save the changes).

Why do you scroll? I just click the new posts button on the thread and presto ... I'm at the new posts. No scrolling required.

There are times I need to check posts that aren't "new".

I'm speaking of the private message subsystem not the main board area. This its not keeping a sort order even between reading one message and going back the the list of all messages. Thus if you've got say 4 messages the newest is usually at the very bottom; sort so newest at top click on it and when you return to the list to see the next the order again has reverted back to oldest at the top.

I've looked at the help section and frankly worthless extremely generalized data, with more on the flow and how designed than actual decent help. So how does a person make this pm system retain the sort order longer than a single click.

Did it work? Did it make you look thinner? If I get any heavier and put a cap on, I'll look just like Michael Moore. ::)

Bones,

READ MY POSTINGS regarding this and I'll tell you how!

I'm 99% sure my PM's are listed in newest to oldest order and they stay in that order. If you would just do what I told you to do and send me a bunch of "meaningless" PM's, I'll verify that my PM's ARE sorted in newest to oldest order and report what my profile settings are so you can compare them to yours. I don't have more than one PM in my inbox yet so I can't check how my PM's are sorted. There is a slight chance that I'm wrong about the sort order for my PM's but I doubt that. It's just been a while since I've had more than one PM in my inbox.

HG not sure if they've done something or an update was installed since my last look at the pm area.

I've got 3 messages dated 12, 15, 18; upon entering the pm area the sort order is as listed. Now sort the date arrow will switch them to 18, 15, 12. But what I've had happen is say go to the 12th one and do a reply go back to the list and its once again 12, 15, 18; without replying it seems to keep the order now since my last look on the 19th.

But the problem still remains exit the pm area look elsewhere and return (say a new message arrives) the order has reverted to old to new. What settings or such need to be done to have the order not change? I've not located that anywhere and the help page is worthless.

Bones,

As I posted before, send me some meaningless PM's so I can see how my PM's sort. I'm quite sure I have mine in descending date order, and I think they stay that way, but can't verify since I only have a single PM in there.

OK I have several messages in my PM inbox. It seems that by default they are listed oldest on top. However if you click the little white arrow or triangle next to the word "date" it will show them with the newest on top.  Seems pretty simple to us non-nerds.

Went back into my messages and they are now listed newest on top.
