I know this topic is X-tremely polarizing and could be a major groaner for some (old cynical, jaded bastards like me). Yes, the season is upon us, and the crass consumer commercialism of it all, along with the overly religious stuff can really get to a person.
But what are your favorite Christmas tunes? I tend to favor either conventional tunes by unconventional artists, or colorful, interesting, original songs with some humor and humanity to them.
Some favorites:
John Prine - Christmas in Prison
Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis
Robert Earl Keen - Merry Christmas from the Family (No. 2 Live Dinner version)
Christmas at the Brothel - James Steinle
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York (Yes, singer frontman Shane MacGowan just died in the last week and was a personal hero)
Anyway, I have lots of others but interested in what others like. It's ok if you list good old chestnuts. I just saw that Brenda Lee was back on the charts with Rockin' around the Christmas Tree!
