I agree that more people are into LPIN than we think. As we all know already, there are several casinos in Elko, plus a few museums (Northeastern Nevada Museum, Western Folklife Center, Cowboy Gear and Arts Museum, and also the Califronia Trail Interpretive Center several miles west of town), golf courses, and hiking trails (already mentioned above). And if they (or their friends) have a car, they can take some side trips to Eureka (with an underground mining tour) and Austin.

I agree with my dear friend :)

Lots of good information on here. I agree, Elko punches well above its weight (population) with the number of things to do, restaurants, hotels etc. and I really enjoy the town myself.

I too, have to keep this a total secret from family and friends and would be shunned faster than an Amish pimp if they find out. As it is, almost all of them suspect I am with someone somewhere when I disappear for an occasional weekend day, lol.

I have to time my weekend getaways such that I'm not leaving till Saturday late morning - with friend commitments on Friday night and Saturday morning - and returning late Monday night. I'm hoping nobody in the office thinks I'm going on job interviews, as long as I'm not taking too many Mondays off in quick succession.
Rick S, the things we have to do to make this lifestyle work. I can't imagine having a wife or girlfriend trying to do this, lol. It is kind of fun sneaking around our civilian peeps trying to keep this all secret though. Yes, you have to be very discreet regarding your job as to not endanger your position.

Oh speaking of girlfriend... never mind.

Actually there are friend commitments on Monday night as well, but as long as I'm there on Friday night, the civilian peeps won't mind too much.  ;D

Haha! Good direct answer! Yes, I have been asked also and usually respond that I was hanging out with a friend, which they always construe as female.

Rick S, you are a busy guy. Yes, I seem to recall you mentioning a girlfriend a time or 2, lol. We won't go there my friend.

It certainly is a more convoluted story than those most here can imagine. I can at least admit to that.  :)

Some civilian peeps have asked why I'm making several trips to Nevada last year. Well it won't continue indefinitely, that's for sure...

Back when I was making lots of trips to the brothels I'd tell folks I was prospecting. Sometimes I actually was prospecting. It's not that far from the California Mother Lode country. If anyone asked if I found any gold, I'd just show 'em some I'd already dug up.

I also used to go to 3 gun matches out west. On my way back home I'd detour through Nevada -- I-80 exit 28 most times. Sometimes Mound House. Found my way to the Chicken Ranch a couple times as well after 3 gun matches in the Prescott, AZ area.
Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by the delusional illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Bob, I like how you operate. Perfect alibis and answers ready to go with proof, lol.

Plenty of places in Nevada have casinos and golf, but hardly any have good fishing to boot.  AND its' on the way to great vacation areas in Utah and Wyoming.  I actually went there several times before I discovered the best reason to hang out there.

Hi everyone! New here and this is my first post on the forum. I was looking for an excuse to make my first post, and I feel like this thread was the perfect place to do so. I am probably the only person here who was planning on going to Elko for reasons other than “the obvious”. In fact, I only even discovered the “obvious” well after I began planning my trip! While lurking here it seems I’m not the only person planning to take the Zephyr train into town arriving at 3:01 am… but that’s what is bringing me to Elko in particular of all places. I have already been to Reno among many other places in Nevada, and I figured I might as well try out Elko for something different. I figured I could enjoy a decent few days gambling in the casinos and dining at the Basque restaurants… though it came as a total surprise that there was another attraction that was of interest!

So to directly answer the question in the main post… in my case I’m choosing to take a vacation to Elko because it’s a new-to-me town in my favourite state that I’d love to check out. I can’t say there seems to be much to go out of my way for. But now that I know about this other thing, I might have a greater desire to come to town and have a little fun :)

when I plan a vacation I really just leave it vague (visit friends, family, take a drive, etc) same with when I get back. not really anyone business what I do when I am not at work. but I think most just assume I sit on my ass at home for a week, lol. and when I am in Elko, or surrounding and someone asks what brings me to town, I will just say that I am visiting friends. not a lie.

I love that one of the guys in a post said he told the receptionist at the Stockman that he was in town to visit the brothels.

Haha... I wish I could be so forthcoming about my Elko entertainment choices! I still get nervous every time I walk from Stockmen's to our favorite ranches, and then back. I'm sincerely hoping none of my non-LPIN friends was driving by when I was walking down 3rd St...

My Elko friends had asked me before what else I was doing between lunch and dinner. I told them I really enjoyed shopping at Big 5 and JCPenney so I spent the whole afternoon there. They seemed satisfied with that answer, I think...
