I've never tried that and don't think I ever would.   A friend did tell me something that works for her though and I've tried it also and had good luck.  You reserve your room then show up late.  Let's say check in is 3:00, you show up at 7:00 or 8:00 say after a nice dinner.  If the hotel is busy they sometimes will fill the less expensive rooms and when you check in they will give you an upgrade.  I would trust this more than trying to bribe a hotel clerk with a $20 and you have nothing to lose.

I've also tried what IB suggests and it works sometimes depending on how full they get. Just make sure you read the policy for giving out your room should you not arrive by a certain time.  Some places will give your room out per the policy and when you arrive shuttle you to another location or even a competitor.

Take care,

My guess is that the $20 sandwich trick worked better back in the days when the mob ran Vegas.  Nowadays there's a lot more gubmen oversight and gaming control investigators are constantly wandering into and out of hotels.

Of course with a former mob lawyer as mayor anything is still within the realm of possibility!  ;D

Actually I loved the "old" Reno and Las Vegas when the Mob ran the casinos. Comps, good food, and cheap prices.

By the way Mayor Goodman has always said "there ain't no mob". He done a fine job for his clients in any event!! ;D

thanks Gents.

I figure you guys would give me some good advise. i am heading to the Hard Rock Hotel in LV for Thanksgiving. Wed to Sat. I stayed here in September for my Bday and was treated very well and was given a very nice up grade to the Paradise towers and a bar comp for my bday and really got a good deal on expedia. So....I' m feeling kinda odd as to ask for a upgrade since its not my birthday and a major holly. But, I like the idea of maybe showing up later and then checking in to see it they will do just that. I'll keep you posted on this.......as per the $20 SANDWICH I would feel embarrassed even more if they gave me back the money or said whats this?  ha ha I think I am just going to book the Paradise tower and maybe if I show up late they will give me a Sweet Suite.  ha ha ;D

Yea... back in the day he represented Lefty Rosenthal, Meyer Lansky, Nicky Scarfo, and Tony Spilatro... a couple of good Jewish boys and a couple of good Italian boys.  None of them would have ever hurt a fly!!  :o  ::)

Yeah, $20 doesn't go very far anymore. A C note might have more success depending how full the casino is, how you booked it (casino bookings have different options than just straight hotel bookings) and how full the place is.

i belong to a las vegas poker discussion forum and this subject just wont die. "has anyone ever tried the $20.00 trick at (enter name of hotel here)?" nearly every hotel in vegas has been covered in the thread but someone will still ask the question about another hotel that hasnt been mentioned yet. makes me want to scream.

i think a better use of $20.00 would be if you arrive in vegas at 11AM and they tell you to come back at 3PM you might try to bribe the desk clerk to check you in right away.
