Title: Carson City
Post by: shooter on August 28, 2009, 08:19:10 PM
Most of us know about the Gold Dust West to stay. A little pricey, but very nice rooms and great beds. coffee shop is also very good.  They offer AAA and AARP discounts, and now a BunnyRanch discount.

The Nevada State Railroad museum is on the South end of town and worth a look.

Eats, well three years ago we held the banquet at Q's B-B-Q, still a favorite . For very gooe Itilian food try Adele's, 1112 N. Carson  1 block North of the Carson St. US 50 corner. Reservations are a good idea.

Some favorite CC eating spots of mine include Red's Old 395 Grill and Grand Central Pizza and Pasta.

I posted this in the rural section but likely it should be here:

Carson City

Try the state Railroad Museum for a break and there are some train rides (by
what I've been told or indicated). Some of the rolling stock has been in
movies. For some info http://www.nsrm-friends.org/ basic data on schedule.

One of these days I've got to revisit the museum during summer last time was in December.

Two of the suggestions I'll have to check out for sure.  Especially the Genoa Bar.  I went to their website and found it to be very interesting.  A number of movies have been filmed there and it has a very rich history.  I sometimes stay at the top of Kingsbury Grade and this is really close by. Read about Genoa Bar here. (http://www.genoabarandsaloon.com/about.cfm)  Some in the group have talked about going to Walley's Hot Springs and this is practically next door.

The other one is the Desert Hill Motel.  That is a very good rate.  I also checked their website and the pictures show nice rooms.  Desert Hills Motel. (http://www.deserthillsmotel.com/index2.html)  The website says they have computer dataports.  I wonder if it is free and if they perhaps have wireless access now?

Thanks for the information and please join in anytime.  We really appreciate it when someone shares tidbits of info that can help others enjoy their visits to Nevada and the brothels.

Take care,
afriend

Very good post Jane.Doe the data is helpful and provides a wide range of options. More of a working person's list of places.

Where's that chicken place that you use to talk about. The resturaunt, not the brothel. Is it still around? Fried chicken?

I'm not sure what you're talking about.  Are you talking about Joe Bob's?  If so then yes they are still around and there are several of them.  If you're looking for fried chicken I've heard great things about a new place but haven't tried yet.  It's down on Mill Street just east of Terminal and it's called M and M's.  It's supposedly a soul food place and I've heard they have great fried chicken.

There was a Joe Bob's Chicken Shack at the Carson Hot Springs at one time. I don't think its there anymore.

Yeah, Jimboy's started out around Sac. and have spread to nevada. I like greasy taco nite where tacos are on sale. Not very fancy and greasy as hell but they're good. a couple years before I retired, I had a buyer's meeting to attend in Sac.  we were all suppose to meet at the bar at the Holiday inn after the day was over. I elected to go to Jimboys instead and got a bag full of tacos, a quart of beer and retreated to my room to watch the Earnest marathon. Everyone was asking where I was and thought I had went to Reno for the nite.  All my supervisors were saying we don't know where he is but he better be back here tomorrow at 8am or he's in big trouble.

Hell with the muffins. I like good donuts. Jelly donuts. but not just any Jelly donut. Jelly donuts that have powered sugar instead of glazeing.

Of course, if all else fails a good cinnamon role with rasins will hit the spot.

BTW: Some really good muffins are at Costco. Huge and at a great price for a dozen.

Nevada... Yes. Built in 1853.   USA... No. Too many older places on the east coast.  Here in Ohio is the Golden Lamb since 1803.  The second oldest in Ohio is located in a log cabin built in 1844.

oldest in NV, but still a grrreat place to park your butt and locals don't seem to bite it off

imagine in winter, with wood burning stove goin', would be a grrreat place to park a southernmost chilly body

somewhere I have a pic documenting drafts, but can't find it at moment, but a brew is mandatory - a must see against that "hill"

Speaking of wood burning stoves, don't see many in businesses. A couple I do recall and found nice and warming were in the Big 4 and Greenlantern in Ely.

Genoa would be a nice place to live. I like the area alot. It's far enough out to get aways from all the congestion but not too far out that it's difficult to go into carson city.

The only problem with places like Genoa is the high cost of housing.  Even a very modest home there I've seen them priced in the mid 6 figure dollar range.  Minden and Gardnerville just a few more miles away is much more reasonably priced.  But I always am concerned about water whenever I look at housing in Nevada.  If I did not have the place I have now, I'd move out there somewhere... once I was convinced that water was not an issue.

Water? All my relatives in Ohio always thought, if it didn't rain in a week, they were in a drought.  I wouldn't worry as much about water as Nevada becoming so cash strapped, they have to start charging state income taxes and property taxes. The very reason many people moved to nevada.
BTW: It's good to see that you have been out and about looking at some of rural Nevada. If ya ever get a chance, head up toward topaz lake. Some beautiful country and don't forget to visit sharkey's.

The water issue in Nevada can be a problem in places like Las Vegas.  I live 85 miles from there and we have enough water to nearly double our population.  Plus no snow! I am very happy living out here.

All the times I've been in vegas, I've been eveywhere except out your ways. I'll have to make sure and get out there on my next trip. A real nice little town that is not far from vegas is Boulder, NV. It looks nice and clean and only about 20 miles from Vegas.

Water is a concern when there is not an ongoing natural supply available, or is susceptible to shortages because of lack of rainfall or snow melt.  You, Flyfisher and I even had a conversation at Scruples about western water rights a couple of years ago as I recall.

I live on top of one of the oldest ancient aquifers (Teays) and this area is blessed with an abundance of water.  The Great Lakes to the north are some of the largest fresh water supplies in the world.  I have a well that produces at least 15 gallons per minute.  I use reverse osmosis to process for drinking and cooking since I live in a somewhat rural area.  A couple of miles from my home is a bottler of water sold throughout the US.  The EPA and others have said that this area has some of the purest water available in the US.  The pumping capacity of wells located in that area can pump up to 1,000 gallons per minute.  I also don't have to pay for water usage, just the equipment to process it.

Currently Nevada is in an area that has a lot of unemployment, as does Ohio.  But obviously they are for different reasons.  If Nevada were to start taxing income then their population would dwindle in a number of areas throughout the state I believe.

I've been to Topaz Lake whenever I go to Yosemite, but since I'm not much of a gambler I've not stopped at Sharkey's.  Mono Lake is also an interesting place.

If there was an easy direct route to get to Interstate 80 Exit 28, Dayton would also be a nice rural area of Nevada worth considering.  There is Six Mile Canyon road (SR79) from there that takes you to the center of Virginia City and is a nice, but winding road.  Nevada is like some other areas of the country where there are natural impements to the development of roads.  In Nevada it's mountains, Chicago it's the lake, etc... etc...

Double what? 5 to 10 thousand or 5 to 10 million?  It makes a big difference.  Where does your water come from?

Ok, this thread started out with things to see, do, and eat in Carson City but has now moved to water rights and the politics thereof.  I think that any further discussions of that should have it's own thread (in the way off topic or general discussion area) before any of the real suggestions get pushed so far down they can't be found.  Thank you for your compliance.

I also have my own "well"  (hand dug by my Fayher, 12 feet deep).

It runs pretty constant at around 1 gallon per minute.

Lucky for me it flows from there by gravity into a holding tank.

Why do you use reverse osmosis to process your water?

Hopefully it will be gone once the sun gets a chance to warm things up a bit.  Looks like the weather should be improving each day through the weekend for those heading to the Ranches and Halloween parties.  Partly cloudy with Mid to upper 60's by the weekend throughout the area. Lows in the 20's - 30's.

Have fun,

Better due to this is where most of the others get the data from. Also the NWS has a network of remote reporting stations, along with udating their current conditions block found in the lower right corner of the more detailed forcast given to a localized spot.

The NWS issues the weather related watches/warnings that the other media then broadcast. If you've got a weather radio/shortwave/ham you can turn in directly to their network that sends out this info also. Look on the site and you can find the frequency for the closest NWS broadcast. Most are in the 162.5mhz area.
