Where to stay in Elko for.......

.....a 50-ish couple who will hit town on a Saturday afternoon in July, who want to get checked in early, have some time to get the Ruby Range gravel road grime off of us, have a drink, have a good meal (nuttin' fancy required, just good food in a fun atmosphere), play some slots, and enjoy drinks and a party at one of the houses, all ending by 10-11pm because we have to hit the road for Idaho early Sunday morning.  The ideal spot would be where we can park the pickup upon arrival and not fire it up until 00:dark:30 Sunday morning, so walking distance or short cab rides are be preferred. The motel/hotel need not be fancy, either, just clean and friendly and quiet.

The wife wants to party, too, and from previous posts it seems as though that will be one of those "depends on what's going on and who's in town when you get there" deals. It's been quite some time since she DATY and she's "what the heck, I'll do it again if I get a chance."  I told her whatever she wants is fine with me--and I'd sure like a chance to watch  ;D.

I did a bit of hotel/motel online shopping and came up with some lodging facility names, which I will not list here, and the customer reviews are all over the place, from "great" to "hell-hole", so some ideas from you gents and ladies who travel to Elko regularly would be most welcomed.

I like the Thunderbird, it is a three block walk from the houses, the coffee shop in the casino across the street is good, but best if there is a best place to gamble in Elko is the Red Lion or Gold Dust West on oppsite ends of town.

Almost anywhere in Elko would be considered a short cab ride.  I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and Hilton Garden Inn. ( Free nights to due racking up hotel points while traveling for work.)  Both were more than adequate and are close in proximity to one another.  They are located about 2 miles away from the houses straight up Idaho street.  Good luck and have fun!

I agree with Shooter on the Thunderbird.

It is the best option if you want a reasonably priced, reasonably nice place that is within walking distance of the houses.

If you don't mind spending more money and don't mind paying for a cab then Midwest Man's suggestions would certainly work, as well as the Red Lion (nicest casino in town) but unless you have holiday inn or hilton points like Midwest Man, you will be paying close to or over $100/night for those hotels.

To me it just seems wrong to spend the $100 or more per night rate in Elko, I guess I'm just a cheap old monger  ;D   But the main reasons I like the Thunderbird (especially in the summertime) their AC units work well, place is pretty quiet and again it is an easy walk to the houses.

The Thunderbird is also owned by the same company that owns the Red Lion and they usually give you a discount breakfast coupon for the Red Lion's coffe shop, which I highly recommend.

I agree.  If I couldn't stay for free at the Holiday Inn or Hilton, I would certainly pick the Thunderbird, for the reasons you outlined.
