I stay at the Stockman/Ramada hotel every time. Can't recommend it enough. It's the closest non-sketchy hotel to the brothels and overall their service was fantastic. They have really nice room that were clean every time I've stayed, also have a hot breakfast included with the room at the cafe in the lobby, and they have toiletries at the front desk if you ask for them. Things like shaving cream and Toothpaste. I also booked a non-refundable room for my last trip but my flight got cancelled. They were nice enough to give me a refund anyway.

As for car rentals, if you're flying into SLC I like Silvercar. They rent out Audi A4s and Q5s. If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the US Bank Altitude Reserve, you also get 30% off 2+ day rentals.

I like Stockmen's Hotel, too. It's only a few blocks from the Red Light District, most people could walk it in a few minutes. It's not luxury, but it's not a dump, either. The price is good.

I also like the casino. It's a small, "locals" type casino. The people there are generally friendly.

It's the only place I stay when in Elko.

For those who like to gamble, you can also earn comps from the various casinos in town ...just be sure to sign up to their players clubs which are free to join.  Depending on your level of play, you can start receiving offers for discounted and/or free rooms, discounts at their restaurants, free play, etc.

At Stockman's/Ramada, you can also earn points for a free night or two.  The same with the Red Lion Hotel/Casino.  The Gold Dust West doesn't have their own hotel, but they have an agreement with the Hampton Inn (across from their parking lot) when you earn room comps.

Esquire Inn a quiet at night, has spotless well-kept rooms. Wi-fi.  Entire property is smoke free.  It's a really short walk to good food, the clubs, and the houses.  As of a week ago, rates were roughly $56.

Townplace Suites are nice; all rooms have a fully equipped kitchen, but the rooms are at least twice as expensive as the Esquire.  It's another smoke free property.  Not sure I would want to drive the length of town after having a few drinks.

For a good quick dinner, Stockman's is still running their $9.95 prime rib special.  Add a salad, drink and a healthy tip, and it's easy to get out the door for about $15.

Yeah I like Stockman's also. Can't beat the proximity to the houses, particularly if fancy a beer or six then don't need to drive. Big parking lot outside which is reasonably safe, the hotel security guard sometimes does a walk around. The rooms are OK but good for the money. Get a limited free breakfast (get a voucher that gives you either waffles or bacon/sausage eggs and toast with coffee). Plus Ramada owned so can use or earn points etc. As usual when carrying a large amount of cash be aware at night, the streets are safe but not particularly well traveled (in January) or well lit.

The Red lion is popular with better rooms and food but more expensive, halfway in price between the Stockman's and holiday inn / hilton hotels. Plus would need to drive.

Tom recently mentioned the restaurant "Mc Adoos " on 5th street near Stockmen's, he claims it serves the best breakfast he's ever had. I checked out their website; they're open from 7AM to 3PM serving breakfast and lunch. I will be trying it for sure when I come out to Elko in April. I also like the coffee shop at Stockmen's, particularly the chicken fried steak and eggs for breakfast and the prime rib special for lunch/dinner.

I booked a surprise hotel in Elko on Hotwire for July 9-11 for $35 a night.
It turned out to be Super 8.

Everything is available on the internet.
1.4 miles from Mona's, northeast of there on Idaho Street.

Google reviews calls it a 2-star hotel and tripadvisor gives it a 3 out of 5 rating.

You don't know you will get that hotel on priceline, but you are guaranteed a 2-star.

I am making for my first ever trip to Elko in June. This has been a post has some very helpful information. Because I will be riding a motorcycle I  think I will stay at the Thunderbird Motel. The parking looks more secure the the casino, and it looks like it's in easy walking distance to the houses. Very excited.

I stayed there once.  Nice room, nice basic breakfast, nice small pool.  Excellent short walk to Mona's and the rest.

You'll be able to park that bike right in front of your door. It is a very short walk to the bar/casino/coffee shop of Stockmen's and a couple more blocks from there to the brothels.

When I last stayed at the Thunderbird there were 2 couples and a single traveling on motorcycles that were also staying there, and did their laundry (small one available there also). So with being an easy walk to the either eat or visit the ranches and nice rooms, should be a good option.

I was curious about the casinos in Elko.  I feel that with me coming into Nevada I would like to win some money gambling, possibly losing it too.  However I am not interested in playing slot machines at all.  Between Gold Dust West Elko and Red Lion which has the better table games?  I enjoy roulette, black jack and poker, where you actually have a chance of winning money.  Also can you tell me how high the min and max are usually towards gambling?

For 3 card poker do you have to bet on the flop, the turn and then again for the river?  I am familiar with Texas hold 'em.  If I am quoting this wrong please correct me.  Thanks for your help.

I am staying at "Ramada Hotel & Stockmen's Casino."  However their website says they only have table games on Monday-Saturday at 6pm-2am.  Why not earlier than 6pm-2am?

Stockmen's has a very small casino and there aren't enough customers to have table games open all day.

I can't answer for the other two casinos you mentioned, but they do have websites, so you might check those out. Or maybe someone here will answer.

I normally stay at the Red Lion, but I play most VP, so I can't help in regard to table games.  I don't know their operating hours, but I've seen their tables open from early morning till late at night, unlike Stockman's.  The same with the Gold Dust West.  I usually play VP at both places.  Although, I heard that the dealers at the Gold Dust tend to be friendlier than at the Red Lion, if that make a difference.

Thanks for your help "Dr. Who" I like the fact that Red Lion has an actual Roulette table and I have learned that they also have a $3 dollar black jack table.  I will just try to be friendly to the dealers there.

Did you win? I play nickel keno machines and even with wins of $950, $350 and $350 I still came out woefully in the red, but i'm not your normal gambler, either. LOL

I actually did go to Red Lion on both of my trips up up to Elko so far.  The Black Jack table happened to be $5 dollars and did okay.  BUT both times they had $1-$2 dollar Texas Hold'em poker competitions you sign up for.  The minimum is $50 dollars and that is what I started with.  I was able to walk away after I won $50 dollars on top of my original $50 dollars, that equaled $100 dollars!!  On my 2nd trip I bet $50 dollars and walked away with over $200 dollars!!  It was a lot of fun.  Their Texas Hold'em poker starts at 6pm on Friday and Saturday.

I usually at Stockmen's Inn when I visit Elko. It's only a few blocks walk to the brothels. My last visit was early in January. I joined both Stockmen's and Red Lion's casino player clubs.

I was getting two free night a month offers from Stockmen's. That stopped, and I started getting steep-reduced hotel offers from Red Lion. I opted for the Red Lion this trip.

Huge disappointment. This is the kind of hotel that was probably a good place to stay 30 years ago. When I walked down to the hotel through the highway, I was trying to determine what color the carpet was. It looked faded, like mud.

The room looked like it hadn't updated in a long time, it gave me the creeps. About midnight the heater fan turned on and the whole room vibrated. A loud, groaning noise.

I went to the desk clerk who apologized (she had probably heard the same thing before) and gave me a room on the second floor, which she said wasn't occupied as often and was thus "better".

I noticed right away, it was better, it looked I had gone back to 1990. I laid down, by this time it was about 11:30, and suddenly the heater comes on and makes this loud whining sound. I was out of there. I went to Stockmen's.

I paid full price, which isn't a lot, and I got a better room than at the great Red Lion.I wouldn't stay there if YOU paid ME.

Wanted to add a restaurant to Peters fantastic list of good places to eat in Elko. Odeh's Mediterranean Restaurant at 282 11th Street. I had lunch there on my last trip to Elko, and look forward to returning on my next visit, which I hope is real soon! They have good falafels, tabbouleh, and baba ganoush. They also have lots of meat dishes on the menu. It's casual place with  good prices and delicious food.

Does anyone have any advice for booking a flight into Elko, like getting a deal/when to book. I’m flying into SLC but I’d rather use Elko if I could get a good deal, hate that there’s just the 1 airline.

Elko airport is SMALL, people are surprised that they even do commercial flights out of there and it’s not just the mail. If you enjoy driving, SLC has a much bigger selection of rental cars and you can do a fun little road trip. If you don’t, the flight from SLC to Elko takes only 40 minutes and is very pleasantly not crowded. I can’t say much about the price, I just think flights are expensive no matter what hehe. :)

Thank you for the info. We like flying to SLC or Reno and then driving.

My preference for travelling to Elko is to fly into SLC.  No connections involved.

I know the feeling...  there's 2 flights per day, but they are expensive.   There's just no convenient way to get there.  Your other choice is to ride the shuttle bus (it's not cheap either) or drive the distance.  It's 4-5 hours from Reno or 3-4 hours from SLC.  Rental cars are still going for $200/day!

If you need help with reservations the best person to talk to would be me.

I just looked and I saw $50 a day for a car
And
$350 round trip to elko to California .

Another option was $100 to salt lake then the $50 casino bus.
Lots of options it isn’t as Inexpensive on every day but I am sure some days are more.

Another lady got 189 one way from
Texas

Delta
Kayak
And many others are good to check for prices too!

Call me directly anytime for the real deal
775-238-3599!

Thanks
Louis

Shoot I just saw your post, thanks for the offer,  I forgot I inquired about that here, but I got about $400 r/t to Elko from the East coast. It was actually cheaper to book a round trip flight to SLC and another r/t from SLC to Elko. Would have been like $600 otherwise. Was going to try the shuttle but the Elko portion of my flight was only $50 more.

I also did a mystery hotel on Priceline, got the Ramada for $59 (it was $90 on Ramada’s website) here’s a tip: if you see a 3 Star Casino Hotel on Priceline, the only 3 Star Hotel (by Priceline’s standards)  with a casino in Elko is the Ramada/Stockmens Casino, 2 blocks from the houses, so you’ll get that one.

See you next weekend.

Hotels . com always has great values, sometimes just a handful of days out. Often slightly better prices if you buy sooner. In many cases you can reserve w/CC and not pay until you arrive - or you can pay on line. Many hotels allow you to cancel if needed as long as it is more than 24 hours in advance, if something comes up - but the site always tells you what those parameters are in advance of your purchase.  There are a couple of nice, inexpensive hotels right on main road (Idaho St is it?) just coming in off of I-80.

Is it weird that I don't want to stay too close to my destination - so that I can build up the excitement on that 1-2 mile drive? By the time I get there, I am darned near howling with happiness and lightly hitting the steering wheel with my hands out of excitement.  At the very least, I am grinning ear-to-ear.

Then that deep breath before I walk in... "Try to be cool, fool. Try to be cool, fool..."

Yeah it's probably just me...

Amtrak. I'm scheduled to get into Elko at 3AM. Any suggestions as to how to get picked up at that time? Anyone else ever arrived by train?

Call Peter or Louis from Monas or Inez’s. They offer free pick up, just not sure if they can do it at that hour. Elko also has a Taxi Service. You may also wish to find a hotel that advertises an airport shuttle… contact them and see if they can get you from the train station, also verify that someone is available at that hour. Just be warned about the Taxi that they are experiencing a driver shortage, people have tried to call them and have had the phone be answered by a recorded message saying no one is available until whatever time, and to call back then.

I know you posted that you were a member from the good old days and have since rejoined, so please forgive me if I’m saying stuff you consider common knowledge.

I don’t know how much you know about Elkos Amtrak Station, but it’s pretty much just a couple of concrete platforms next to train tracks. No staff, restrooms or vending machines. No where to wait indoors. Once you step off the train you are on your own.

I have no idea what their on time % is, but Amtrak is known for being late, especially on that route. Torri (one of the girls from Inez’s) told me she was supposed to be on that 3am train one night, she ended up getting there I think late morning, THE NEXT DAY, so she was delayed by like 30 hours. She said she will not take Amtrak again. But on a positive note if it does happen being picked up at 3am won’t be a problem.

I also don’t know where you are coming from or what your personal situation is, or if you have chosen not to go this way for whatever reason, but have you considered the SLC-EKO shuttle? Ever since that launched Amtrak has become way less popular. It runs from SLC airport to Maverick Casino in Elko. Arrives in Elko early evening and departs Elko late morning. Never taken it myself but everyone who has seems very happy with it.

Thanks for the info. I remember the Elko platform from 20 yrs ago and seems to be the same now. I'm staying at Stockman's so I'll call them and see if they offer a pick up service. I'll happily call Mona's/Inez's if they'll come pick me up! :)
