Spitfire Pub & Grill - English themed pub, with a few Spitfire airplane models hanging around.
Good food that I've had.
A little off the beaten path - at South McCarran and Longley, but good.
7 am to Midnight, seven days a week is the claim.

Great Basin Brewing company has added a location at South-West corner of South McCarran and Virginia,
behind Romano's Macaroni Grill/near to Barnes & Noble.
Good beer, good food.  This location has pizza in addition to the same menu as Sparks.

They also took over the Buckbean Brewing (now defunct) location on East McCarran,
though this location is only beer, no food.

Original location in Sparks still happening too.

you are a man after my heart... beer and food in the same places....

i have to say the fish and chips at the original Great Basin is better than at the new location though

I've always liked the Claim Jumper at S. Virginia & Kietzke and usually go there as soon as I get into town.    Good food and portions.   If I travel and eat at a franchised restaurant, I like to go to someplace that we don't have here in the Boston area.

Next time you're at Great Basin try the Brueben sandwich.   Great bread and some of the leanest, tastiest pastrami I've ever eaten.   The sandwich comes with pastrami, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing but I have them hold the thousand island because I don't like it.   Their sausage sampler is excellent also.

The RGJ just posted a readers poll concerning the best burger in town.   For those who like to taste the local flavor they limited it to local restaurants only, no chains.   I hope this link works.

Some of you may remember the Silver Club on Victorian east of John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks.   It closed about 4 or 5 years ago and recently reopened as the Bourbon Square Casino.   It is now owned by the same group that owns the Stockman's casinos in Elko and Wendover as well as the El Capitan in Hawthorne.

They completely remodeled the interior and opened up just before Labor Day.  Sheri and I have been down there several times since then.  They are planning to be a locals type casino and the staff is very friendly.   They currently only have one restaurant which is a buffet.   We've gone there the last two weekends, lunch last weekend and breakfast this weekend, and the food has been quite good.   Breakfast and lunch are $7.99 while dinner is $8.99 ( they also have a 10% senior discount).

They only have slots and video poker at the current time but plan to introduce table games at some point in the future.   If you're in the area drop by and check them out.  If you're a local and get a players card they have been sending out flyers with free play on a regular basis.

Is Stockman's Casino in Elko a good place to eat?
Also, is it a good place to gamble, or should I wait until I get to Vegas?  I am newbie at gambling, too, other than Atlantic City 30 years ago.  I thought I would try it out as long as I'm in NV.

What type of gambler are you? Big bucks, excitement (Vegas strip)? Or good deals and better odds (Off-strip Vegas).

Don't play any slots unless you are at the Palms, Rio, or Orleans...Fremont street is fun. But slots at the main casinos on the strip will take money quicker than a stripper.  I personally love slots and usually win.. soooo... Tables, I just stick to roulette. I am sure you are a better gambler than me.

I haven't been to the Stockmans in years but the last time I was there I won $100 playing $5 blackjack in about 2 hours.  That casino is a little older but I had a good time.  If your not a big money player it's harder and harder to find low limit tables in Vegas.

For those who might be in the Reno area to visit the houses I would like to recommend a local eating spot, Pinocchio's.   They have been in Reno forever but I hadn't tried them except for booths at events until a year or two ago.  They used to be down on Moana Lane but a few years  ago moved to a building behind the Bank of America on South Virginia across from Meadowood Mall (my neighborhood).  They have both sandwiches and entrees and everything I've tried has been excellent.  Good friendly staff and interesting surroundings.  I can recommend the spicy pasta dinner as well as several of the sandwiches.

I think they might have a second location in Sparks now.

Any places to Stay in Elko?
There are plenty of places to stay in Elko ...Red Lion, High Desert Inn, Thunderbird, Stockman's are just a few.  Personally, I like the Red Lion, but it's one of the higher end places in town.  I heard that Stockman's had done some remodeling of their rooms, but I haven't stayed there in years.

I plugged in some arbitrary dates on TripAdvisor for Elko Hotels, so this should give you some additional info on the area...
