Respect should be given freely until it is lost, then it must be earned.

I also go along with isurfer.  Everyone gets my respect, but when they land up in my doghouse, it'll take a lot of hard work for them to regain my respect.   8)

I agree with this completly respect is earned. When a person has earned respect they keep that respect. Unless they do something disrespectful to loose it.

I believe Isurfer has come closest to my position.  Everyone starts out deserving respect.  They can earn their way to disrespect through their actions.  Once you reach my "shit list" you can then earn your way into non-existence.  Simply, I no longer recognize their presence in my world.  Should I come across one of those, I simply do not see them as you can't see what is not there.  I don't have to carry the hate as you can't hate what doesn't exist.  Simple.

You only choose to carry hate, and by not acknowledging that someone is present in your world, you may think that you don't see them, and you are not carrying hate, but in reality, you are in denial.  The true solution is not to ignore, but to forgive and sometimes love.  Hate the negative action, but love the person.  That is simple.

If a person repeatedly does you wrong, even after you have shown respect or love them repeatedly, then your actions will make them think... "Why does this person do this, even if I don't deserve it".  You may think that they are not thing this, but they are indeed.  That is the ultimate payback.  Their wrongdoings will come back to them eventually.  Don't believe me?  Sit down sometime and I'll tell you a made for TV true story about how I learned this the hard way.

You are probably right but I have forgiven the wrongs done me, I just choose not to be forced to remember them anymore.  As Willie Nelson said "Forgiving her was easy but forgetting seems to take the longest time".
